Arkansas: Southern state with a mild climate

Most regions of the state have a temperate subtropical climate with warm and humid summers (sometimes hot) and mild, dry winters. Hurricanes are rare due to the inland location, but Arkansas lies in Tornado Alley between the Great Plains and the Gulf of Mexico and has regular complaints of tornado damage.

The capital Little Rock is on the Arkansas River. The city was in international focus in 1957 when nine African American students were granted access to Central High School under police protection. This is still an important date for the civil rights movement in the USA, which is also commemorated by a museum today.

The state parliament building is a slightly smaller replica of the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC The seat of government is the Old State House, which is considered one of the most beautiful of all U.S. states.
