The Ozark plateau

Geographically, Missouri is divided into three areas. To the north of the Missouri River is a vast prairie landscape with rolling hills. It is part of the Central Plains, which also extend to the neighboring states of Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska. South of the Missouri, the Ozark Plateau, a plateau that is characterized by a rugged and deeply cut landscape, runs through the country. This massive plateau has a size of 122,000 square kilometers and is the largest mountain region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains. This high mountain range not only stretches across Missouri, it also takes northeast Oklahoma and southeastern Kansason. Together with the Quachita Mountains, the Ozark Plateau forms the U.S. Interior Highlands. The highest part of the Ozark Plateau is the Boston Mountains with peaks up to 750 meters high.

The Mississippi and Missouri Delta

The fertile, agricultural alluvial land of the Mississippi begins in southeast Missouri, but is also crossed by marshland. This region is known as the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Missouri is the destination for all travelers who want to experience authentic America away from the busy world cities. The diverse water sports possibilities make Missouri so popular because the numerous rivers, reservoirs and national parks are ideal excursion destinations for athletes and families. Swimming, canoeing, rafting, wakeboarding, windsurfing, sailing and water skiing, everything is offered on a grand scale. The mountain region is partly volcanic in origin and has numerous hiking and trekking trails. Grand Gulf State Park leaves a lasting impression, which is crossed by a forty meter high gorge and a partially accessible cave system. A scenic gem is the Elephant Rocks State Park in southeast Missouri. Many golf fans are always drawn to Missouri and for good reason. There are the best prerequisites for improving your handicap in golf courses spread across the country. The golf region around Lake of the Ozarks is particularly popular.

Attractions in Missouri

Kansas City and Herman

In addition to St. Louis, Kansas City is one of Missouri's most famous cities. However, this name is misleading, because many holidaymakers are surprised that this city is largely in Missouri and not in Kansas. The largest city in this state is also known as the City of Fountains because there are quite a few fountains there. Most Americans of German descent live in the Midwest. Therefore, you can find many cities and families with German names in this part of the USA. Descendants of German emigrants who came to America in the 19th century live here. The small town of Herman is an authentic American town, but in which a lot of German customs are cultivated. This small town has only 3,000 inhabitants and yet it is a popular destination, especially because of its Oktoberfest. They say

St. Louis

One of the most famous cities in the United States is in Missouri: St. Louis. The city benefits from its cultural wealth. Numerous concert halls, theaters and museums ensure that general education is not neglected even on vacation. Nightclubs, bars and restaurants are waiting for all night owls who value well-kept entertainment. The Gateway Arch is the city's landmark and the largest monument in the United States. This huge arch of shiny metal spans the entire city. It commemorates the development of the West, because it was at this point that the expedition led by Captain Lewis and William Clark on behalf of President Thomas Jefferson brokeon May 14, 1804 for the first overland expedition to the west. The Gateway Arch is artfully staged in the dark by light.

Hannibal

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are probably the most popular novel heroes worldwide. Its inventor, the writer Mark Twain, lived not far from St. Louis in the picturesque small town of Hannibal, where his house can still be seen today. Anyone who has ever been to Hannibal knows that this place served as a model for the writer's famous adventure novels. Time seems to stand still in this place and Mark Twain is expected to come around the corner to greet his fans. The Java Jife is a downtown café that serves incredibly good coffee and cake. A boat trip with the Mark Twain Riverboat completes the visit to Hannibal. The Mark Twain Cave Complex can be visited in a guided tour. You quickly notice this cave also served as the model for his stories. At the neighboring winery, Mark Twain fans can end their day with a good glass of port wine. The charming little town center offers culture, art and gastronomy at the highest level.

Missouri history

Missouri has been known as the state since 1821. Missouri became the 24th state to join the American Union on August 10, 1821. Before that, this area was part of French Louisiana. Since the Americans, including many immigrants from Europe, sought independence from Great Britain and France, the Missouri territory was bought by France in the course of the Louisiana Purchase and initially bore the designation Louisianafurther. As the western part of North America was increasingly developed at this time, Missouri was soon given the nickname "Gateway to the West". Numerous settlers on their way to the promised land in the west traveled through Missouri with their treks. Despite the slave husbandry and its advocacy, Missouri sided with the northern Union states during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. However, there was also a minority in favor of belonging to the Confederate States that fought to preserve slavery. The U.S. Navy has a long tradition. Four ships were named USS Missouri to honor this state.
